Letter Keys: The English Alphabet
The 26 English letters are arranged in three main rows on your keyboard. This layout is called QWERTY because of the first six letters in the top row.

Number Keys and Numeric Keypad
Number Row (Top of Keyboard)
The numbers 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 appear above the letter keys. Use these for typing phone numbers, addresses, and dates in your documents.

Tip: Each number key also has a symbol. Hold Shift to type the symbol instead of the number.
Numeric Keypad (Right Side)
Many keyboards have a separate number pad on the right. This is faster for typing lots of numbers, like in spreadsheets or calculations.
Common Punctuation Keys
Punctuation marks help make your English writing clear and professional. These three marks are essential for every ESL learner.
Period (.)
End sentences with a period. Press the key next to the right Shift key.
Example: I love learning English.
Comma (,)
Separate items in lists and pause in sentences. Found left of the period key.
Example: I like apples, oranges, and bananas.
Question Mark (?)
Ask questions by holding Shift and pressing the forward slash key.
Example: How are you today?

Special Function Keys

Enter Key
Start new lines and confirm commands. Large key on the right side of your keyboard.
Space Bar
Creates spaces between words. The long key at the bottom of your keyboard.
Backspace
Deletes the character to the left of your cursor. Use for quick corrections.
Delete Key
Removes the character to the right of your cursor. Useful for editing text.

Hold Shift and press a letter for one capital letter. Perfect for names and sentence beginnings.
Example: Hold Shift + j = J

Caps Lock
Press once to type ALL CAPITAL LETTERS. Press again to return to lowercase. Use carefully!

Remember: In English, only capitalize the first letter of sentences and proper nouns (names, places).
